Thank you to Barbara Bratton and the TOPS leadership for the opportunity to speak with you last Friday, May 28th at the Holiday Inn by the airport. It was truly a pleasure to see your inviting and supporting faces in the crowd. I’m impressed by your diligence, joy and willingness to support each other.
I hope you were uplifted by my story, The Climb of My Life! Here’s a recap of the most important points:
- Buy the Ticket
Your journey begins when you commit. Often it is a small but vital step in the process. For me, the journey didn’t truly begin until I bought that ticket to Africa. What is the one step you need to take to commit to big change?
- Transformation begins during the preparation.
We often think the big moment possesses the power for transformation but in truth, your change occurs in each step you take. I transformed as I got myself out of bed to train, ate healthy food and prepared for the climb. The final climb was the cherry on top!
- Excellence has a pace.
The climb guides called in “pole-pole,” which is swahili for “slowly, slowly.” They were charged with ensuring we didn’t go too fast, or too slow, but the right pace that would help us reach our ultimate goal, the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
- Self Care is essential to brilliance.
Our American guide was adamant about one thing: our job was to take care of ourselves. I realized then that big feats of strength and power require self care. How do you take care of yourself?
- Small barriers stand between you and your best life.
Many people told me they would never take the trip to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro because there were no toilets. It certainly was a challenge and made it harder for all of us, but the view OUTSIDE the toilet made it all worth it. Don’t let small things keep you from big and beautiful experiences.
- Joyful service inspires action!
Every day we walked into camp to be greeted by a very joyful singing and dancing African guide and support staff. No matter how tired we were, their smiles and commitment inspired us! How can you inspire your team with inspirational service? What can you do?
- You can’t do it alone.
You can certainly live a small life alone. But if you have plans to live a bigger life, you will need a team of people, from guides and coaches to show you the way, to teammates who share your vision of success. Who is on your team? How can you lean on them? Where can you offer your gifts?
- All you have is now.
The final hours to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro were grueling and transformational. It was in those steps I learned the most vital and life changing lesson. I can’t control the future. I can’t do a thing about the past. All I can do is control what I do in this moment. THIS second is where all the power of life resides.
I hope you will be able to apply even one of these lessons to your life, and share them with others. I am certain each one can help you in the journey to the successful achievement of your goals. Again, I thank you for your kindness and attention and I look forward to serving you again someday!
Sincerely,
Liz Nead
