Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:  The 1440 Hero!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is embedded in my presentation, “The 1440 Principle.” I state there are three ways to manage those precious 1440 minutes you get every day.  As a resource,  a legacy and as a sacrifice.

1440 Principle
It wasn’t the length of his life but what he did with his minutes that have made all the difference.

When you treat your minutes as a resource, you simply understand you are “paying” out your minutes to accomplish your goals.  While your minutes are not infinite, you know they are infinitely valuable.  If you use your minutes to leave a legacy, you could be like the founding fathers.  They locked themselves in a room for several months and created the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, a legacy on which we still reference and depend.

The highest level of time awareness and management, the greatest leaders in the 1440 Principle (in my humble opinion) are those that use their time as a sacrifice.  They believe in something greater than themselves and they sacrifice the minutes they have been given to change the world, even if it means sacrificing the end of their minutes prematurely.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a 1440 lion.  He believed in a world of equality long before it was convenient, much less believable.  He wasn’t always encouraged, in fact towards the end of his life he wasn’t sure he would see the fruits of his labor in his lifetime.  Yet he persevered and that insistence led to the end of of his life.  I am eternally grateful and honored to live as a beneficiary of his sacrifice, a brown female who spends her minutes standing on stages and presuming to encourage others.  In his lifetime, my existence would be impossible.  He sacrificed his 1440, so my 1440 could be purpose and joy-filled.

Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr!  I plan on honoring your efforts with hard work and fearlessness today.

My favorite quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.

The quality, not the longevity of one’s life is what is important.

Darkness cannot drive darkness out, only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.
