Three challenges to make the information stick.

  • Start a diversity journal to document how you are feeling as you run into “diversity conversations.” Notice when you want to retreat, when you feel angry, when you feel driven to argue. Also notice when you feel most comfortable and affirmed.
  • Ask permission to have a conversation with someone who is different from you. Prepare a question or topic and jump in. Be ready to listen and understand, rather than express your viewpoint. What did you learn? What about your own perspective can be enhanced or adjusted?
  • Find a good biography about a historical figure who succeeded despite discrimination. What is relateable for you? What feels dissimilar?
