A special recap of the climb presentation!

Here is the recap of your presentation, the Climb of Your Life!
I went to Mt. Kilimanjaro with my own version of a transformation. I thought I would be conquer the mountain with my spirit and my workouts. In the end, I was transformed, but it was the Active Leadership of the Mt. Kilimanjaro guides. On the outside, they didn’t look powerful. Their clothes and their accommodations were not impressive. But their focus on excellence, clarity of focus and simple pride in their mission was unforgettable. Here is a recap of the points I shared from the stage.
- The beginning of the journey: Remember that you might be talking about change but you and your team won’t believe it until you full understand individuals and groups and organizations feel they have “bought the ticket” and are fully invested in the process.
- Be a partner in transformation: We often define the transformation at the moment of the shift but the real changes happen in preparation. Help your team you lead and serve to make the most of the preparation process so they can keep up with the adventure begins!
- Self-care is essential to success. A leader cannot successfully lead a team that isn’t able to take care of themselves. Help them achieve balance and empower them to diagnose and communicate issues so you can take handle them.
- Set the pace of excellence. Don’t be swayed by the drives of others to pull back or push to the finish line. Choose a pace of progress that ensures completion. Focus on the finish, but bring your team with you.
- Understand the power of the barriers, no matter what the size. We all know what could have stopped me from climbing Mt. Kill and it wasn’t the cold nights or my constant breathlessness. Most of the things that hold you and your team back are relatively small. Don’t dismiss them. Rather, help each person see the payoff (remember those clouds?) and they will push through the issues.
- The need for inequality. It wasn’t fair that poor Moody had to carry his pack AND mine, but it was necessary to get us all to the top. Don’t expect everything to be equal. Instead, look for those opportunities for inequality and plan for them.
- Embrace the power of now. I was very worried I wasn’t going to get to the top, and my brain was filled with the reasons why it wasn’t going to happen. As I learned to focus on the real problem at hand (the next step), I was able to navigate the journey. Push away the worries and the unnecessary thoughts and do what you can in this moment, with excellence!
